Burnt offering
An animal offering consumed almost entirely by fire on the altar.
Also called · whole offering
What it means
An animal offering consumed almost entirely by fire on the altar.
The worshiper brought an acceptable animal, laid a hand on it, and the priests handled its blood and burned its portions. Unlike some offerings, no ordinary meal portion remained.
How it appears in the Bible
Its Hebrew name emphasizes what “goes up,” linking the whole offering with smoke rising from the altar.
