Places & biblical world
Hades
The Greek New Testament term for the realm of the dead.
Also called · realm of the dead
What it means
Hades often represents Greek Sheol in biblical translation and is distinct in wording from Gehenna.
New Testament passages portray it with different images, so no single narrative detail should define every use.
How it appears in the Bible
Acts applies a Psalm about not being abandoned among the dead, and Revelation pictures Death and Hades surrendering their dead.
Translation note
Some translations use “hell,” which can blur the distinction from Gehenna.
