Rabbi
A respectful Semitic title meaning “my teacher” or “my master.”
Also called · Teacher · Master
What it means
In the Gospels disciples and others address Jesus as Rabbi, and Nicodemus uses it when recognizing him as a teacher from God.
The title was used for respected teachers in the first century; its later formal institutional use should not automatically be read back into every Gospel scene.
How it appears in the Bible
Rabbi expresses a teacher-disciple relationship and social honor within Jewish settings of the New Testament.
