What it means
John 1:38 explains Rabbi as Teacher. Two of John’s disciples follow Jesus, address him by this title, and ask where he is staying.
In John 3, Nicodemus visits Jesus at night and calls him a teacher who has come from God. Their conversation then turns to being born anew.
How it appears in the Bible
In Matthew 23, Jesus describes scribes and Pharisees who enjoy public honor. He tells his disciples that they have one teacher and are all brothers, and that the greatest among them should serve the others.
