Scroll

A rolled writing material used for biblical texts and other records.

Also called · book scroll · written roll

What it means

Texts were written in columns on sheets joined into a roll and read by unrolling the material.

Scrolls could preserve prophetic words, legal records, letters, and the books read in worship.

How it appears in the Bible

Luke describes Jesus opening the scroll of Isaiah in the synagogue and reading from it.

Translation note

Biblical “book” can refer to a scroll rather than a modern bound volume.
