A written document stored as a roll and opened for reading.

What it means
Writing material, such as prepared animal skin, could be rolled for storage. Longer texts could be arranged in columns.
In Jeremiah 36, Baruch writes down God’s words as Jeremiah dictates them and reads the scroll to the people.
Ezekiel 2–3 describes a scroll written on both sides with lamentations, mourning, and woe. Ezekiel eats it in a vision.
How it appears in the Bible
In Luke 4, Jesus opens Isaiah’s book and reads in the synagogue at Nazareth. After reading, he closes it and returns it to the attendant.
Translation note
A biblical “book” need not be a modern bound volume. The book in Luke 4 is a scroll.
