Measures & money

Talent

A very large unit of weight and, by extension, a large monetary amount.

Also called · talanton

What it means

A talent was not originally a personal ability but a heavy weight used for metals such as gold and silver.

Its exact mass varied among systems, yet it always represented a substantial quantity in biblical narratives.

How it appears in the Bible

The tabernacle accounts measure precious metals in talents, while Jesus’ parables use talents to picture immense debts or entrusted wealth.

Translation note

Do not assign one universal kilogram or currency value; standards varied.
