Wineskin

A sewn animal-skin container used to carry and store liquids.

Also called · skin bottle · leather wine bag

What it means

Wineskins were flexible containers, but age and use could leave them dry or brittle.

Fermenting new wine expands, so Jesus’ saying warns that an old skin may burst under the pressure.

How it appears in the Bible

The Gibeonites showed worn and split wineskins as part of their claim that they had traveled from far away.

Translation note

The object was a skin container, not a glass bottle.
