Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to Jesus’ tomb. She saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. Mary ran to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved. She told them that someone had taken the Lord from the tomb and that she did not know where he had been placed.
Peter and the other disciple set out together for the tomb. The other disciple ran faster and arrived first. Bending down, he saw the linen wrappings lying inside, but he did not enter.
Simon Peter arrived behind him and went directly into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings and the cloth that had covered Jesus’ head. The head cloth was not lying with the other linen but was rolled up separately. The disciple who had arrived first then entered as well. He saw and believed, though the two still did not understand the Scripture that Jesus must rise from the dead. They returned to the place where they were staying.
Mary remained outside the tomb, weeping. As she cried, she bent down and looked inside. Two angels in white sat where Jesus’ body had been, one near the head and the other near the feet. They asked Mary why she was crying.
Mary answered that people had taken away her Lord and that she did not know where they had put him. After speaking, she turned and saw Jesus standing there. She did not recognize him.
Jesus asked why she was weeping and whom she was seeking. Thinking that he was the gardener, Mary asked him to say where he had carried the body. If he told her, she said, she would take it away.
Jesus called Mary by name. She turned toward him and addressed him in Hebrew as Rabbouni, meaning teacher. Jesus told her not to hold on to him because he had not yet ascended to the Father. She was to go to his brothers and say that he was ascending to his Father and their Father, his God and their God.
Mary Magdalene went to the disciples. She announced that she had seen the Lord. She also delivered the words Jesus had spoken to her.
