In Egypt Joseph was sold to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officers. God was with Joseph and made his work prosper. Potiphar noticed and placed his household and possessions under Joseph’s care. The estate was blessed while Joseph managed it.
Potiphar’s wife repeatedly demanded that Joseph sleep with her. He refused, saying his master had withheld nothing except his wife and that such an act would be a sin against God. One day she seized his garment when no one else was inside. Joseph left it in her hand and fled outdoors.
She told the household and her husband that Joseph had attacked her. Potiphar became angry and put Joseph in the prison where royal prisoners were held. God remained with Joseph and showed him favor. The prison keeper entrusted the prisoners and daily work to him.
Pharaoh’s cupbearer and baker were later confined there. Each had a troubling dream on the same night. Joseph said interpretations belonged to God and invited them to describe what they had seen.
The cupbearer saw three branches produce grapes that he pressed into Pharaoh’s cup. Joseph said he would be restored in three days and asked to be remembered because he had been unjustly imprisoned. The baker saw birds eating from three baskets on his head. Joseph said he would be executed in three days.
On the third day, Pharaoh’s birthday, the king held a feast. He restored the cupbearer and executed the baker, just as Joseph had interpreted. The restored cupbearer did not remember Joseph. He forgot him.
