Abraham was old, and God had blessed him in every way. He charged his senior servant not to find Isaac a wife among the Canaanites but among Abraham’s own relatives. Isaac must not be taken back there. Abraham trusted that God would send a messenger ahead to guide the search.
The servant took ten camels and valuable gifts to the city of Nahor in Mesopotamia. At evening he stopped beside a well and prayed for clear guidance. When he asked a young woman for water, the right woman would offer water not only to him but also to his camels.
Before he finished praying, Rebekah arrived with a water jar. She belonged to the family of Abraham’s brother Nahor. When the servant requested a drink, she gave him water and drew enough for all the camels. He watched her, then gave her jewelry and asked about her family and lodging.
Rebekah’s family welcomed him. Before eating, the servant explained his errand, his prayer at the well, and how Rebekah’s actions had answered it. Her brother Laban and father Bethuel said the matter had come from God and agreed that Rebekah should go.
The family hoped she might remain several days, but the servant wished to leave. They asked Rebekah herself, and she said she would go. Her family blessed her, and she departed with her nurse and attendants, riding the camels behind Abraham’s servant.
Near Beer-lahai-roi, Isaac went into the field toward evening and saw camels approaching. Rebekah saw him and asked the servant who he was. Learning that he was Isaac, she covered herself with a veil. The servant reported everything to Isaac. Isaac brought Rebekah into Sarah’s tent, married her, and loved her. After his mother’s death, Isaac found comfort with Rebekah.
