City gate

A fortified entrance that also served as a public center for law, trade, and leadership.

Also called · gate

What it means

Ancient gates included chambers and open spaces where elders, officials, merchants, and petitioners gathered.

Thus “in the gate” can mean participation in civic judgment rather than merely standing in a doorway.

How it appears in the Bible

Abraham’s purchase is witnessed at a gate, and Boaz settles the redemption of Ruth’s family there.

Translation note

Gate forms differed by city and period.
