Myrrh

A fragrant resin used in sacred oil, gifts, perfume, and burial preparation.

What it means

Myrrh was an ingredient in the holy anointing oil prescribed in Exodus.

The New Testament names it among the gifts to Jesus and in the spices used for his burial.

How it appears in the Bible

John says Nicodemus brought a mixture including myrrh when Jesus’ body was wrapped for burial.

Translation note

Myrrh is a resinous aromatic substance and should not be confused with frankincense.
