An ancient Greek unit of distance; the word also referred to a running course.

What it means
The selected World English Bible places Emmaus sixty stadia from Jerusalem in Luke 24. John 6 says the disciples have rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia when they see Jesus walking on the sea.
Revelation 14 describes blood flowing from the wine press of God’s wrath for one thousand six hundred stadia. This is a judgment vision, distinct from the journey scenes.
How it appears in the Bible
In 1 Corinthians 9, Paul uses a race and athletes’ self-control as comparisons for pursuing an incorruptible prize. The emphasis there is disciplined effort, rather than calculating a journey’s distance.
Translation note
Stadia is a plural form of stadion. The selected translation retains stadia in the distance passages; modern metric conversions depend on the standard used.
