Upper room

A room on an upper floor used for lodging, meals, prayer, or gatherings.

Also called · upstairs room

What it means

Flat-roofed houses could support an added room reached by stairs, sometimes offering privacy and air.

The expression describes a building space rather than one unique sacred room in every passage.

How it appears in the Bible

Jesus’ final meal is prepared in a large upper room, and the disciples later gather and pray upstairs.

Translation note

Different passages refer to different buildings and rooms.
