What it means
Daniel 3 describes a herald calling out a command at the dedication of King Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image.
He tells people of different nations and languages to bow to the image when the music sounds. He also delivers the warning that anyone who refuses will be thrown into a burning furnace.
How it appears in the Bible
Jonah 3 describes a decree proclaimed in Nineveh by the king and his nobles. People and animals must not eat or drink; they are to wear sackcloth, cry to God, and turn from evil and violence. The decree hopes that God may turn from his anger; it does not guarantee that outcome. In First Corinthians 9, Paul uses running and boxing to explain self-discipline so that, after preaching to others, he will not himself be disqualified.
