Holy of Holies

The innermost and most restricted room of the tabernacle and temple.

What it means

A veil separated it from the outer Holy Place, and the ark was placed inside.

The high priest entered in connection with the annual Day of Atonement rites, following strict instructions.

How it appears in the Bible

Solomon’s temple also had an inner sanctuary prepared for the ark of the covenant.

Translation note

“Holy of Holies” is a superlative expression meaning the most holy place.
